Electromagnetic DC motor consists of a stator pole, rotor (armature), reverser (commonly known as the commutator), electric brush, case, bearings and so on.

　　The stator pole (main pole) of electromagnetic DC motor consists of iron core and the excitation winding. According to different modes of excitation (in the old standard known as the initiation), electromagnetic DC motors can be divided into series wound DC motor, shunt DC motor, separately excited DC motor and compound excitation DC motor. Because of different excitation modes, the rules of the stator magnetic flux (generated by the magnet exciting coil of the stator pole when electricity running through) are different.

The excitation winding and the rotor winding of DC motor speed control connect in series through electric brush and commutator. Field current is proportional to the armature current. The magnet flux of the stator increases with the increase of the excitation current. Torque is approximately proportional to the speed square of armature current, rotate speed decreases rapidly with torque or current increasing. The starting torque can reach 5 times of rated torque. In a short time overload torque can reach more than 4 times of rated torque. The speed change ratio is rather larger, no-load speed is very high (generally on-load running is not allowed ). External resistors and series field windings can be connected in series (or in parallel) to achieve the speed change.
