Electric DC Motor-What Are the Types of Starting Methods?

The electric DC motor is a motor that is commonly used in a lot of applications. Among other differences, it also differs from other electrical motors in its way of starting. The reason for this is the high starting current of the motor which could cause damage to the armature winding’s internal circuit, if it is not limited to a specific value.

It is the starter which helps to limit this starting current of the electric DC motor. To limit the current, we could use any device which has a variable resistance and armature winding connected in series. When this is done, the motor remains safe while starting.

What Are the Starting Methods of a DC Motor?

Since an electric DC motor can be damaged if the starting torque and current are high, there are a few different starting methods to see that this does not happen. Of all the starters available, a few are mentioned as follows:

3 point starter: This starter is used in compound wound DC motors or shunt wound DC motors for their optimal starting and running.
4 point starter: This kind of starter is similar to a 3 point starter but is constructed with a point and a coil in addition. This changes a bit of the way it functions but the basic characteristics are the same as the 3 point one.
Series wound DC motor starter: This starter does not use a load release coil.

Basically, all these starters are used as a kind of protective device for the electric DC motors. Their roles in the starting and running of the motor are highly significant. These and other kinds of motors are available at Teco Electric Co. Ltd. Mostly used for compound and shunt wound motors, these starters are essential to their good maintenance.
